An independent systematic research firm. We study what markets pay for bearing risk, and the conditions that decide whether that payment is worth taking.
Short-horizon risk. Markets put a price on uncertainty every morning. We study what that price pays for, and how to recognise the mornings when it no longer pays enough.
The short side. Every cycle produces companies whose story has outrun their balance sheet. We study them forensically and systematically: businesses that depend on the capital markets to stay open, cash that goes out faster than it comes in, and fundamentals deteriorating faster than the share price admits.
Defensive positioning. Protection is cheapest before anyone wants it. We study the real assets that have held their value when equities, credit and currencies were under stress, and how to own them in a form that does not give back the calm years while it waits.
Two ways of knowing have been set against each other since Aristotle drew the line in the Posterior Analytics: reasoning forward from a cause you have assumed, and reasoning backward from an effect you have observed. The scholastics gave the pair their Latin names. Kant narrowed them again, to knowledge held before experience and knowledge drawn out of it. We work in the older and plainer sense.
A market does not explain itself. It publishes effects. A price, a fill, a range that held or broke, a premium that was rich every morning until the morning it was not. Cause is always inferred afterwards, and the inference is worth exactly as much as the record it was drawn from. So we keep the record first and argue from it second. A thesis that arrives ahead of the evidence is a position, not a finding.
That ordering is the whole of the discipline. It is slower than having a view. It is also why we are willing to publish the days the model sat on its hands beside the days it did not.
